My Upcoming Article About Organic Cotton

I was asked to write a comprehensive article about organic cotton for a syndicated news site.  They were featuring several new organic baby clothes retailers such as First Step Organic, Fierce Hugs etc and wanted to have informational articles to support the feature.

I had some previous information about the use of pesticides in conventional cotton farming and I was informed enough to know that these were harmful to the environment but here I admit that I was entirely clueless about the size of the damage caused by these chemicals.  Writing this article was a complete eye opener for me.  From the Organic Exchange website I learned that the majority of pesticides and insecticides were being used for the purpose of growing cotton.  If all cotton farmers switched to organic farming today we would eliminate about 20% of these chemicals.  That is a significant amount and a good reason to support organic growers, manufacturers and certainly retailers.

Furthermore, a USGS study points out that 50% of the Nation’s population relies on ground water for drinking. This is higher for people living in the agricultural areas, where about 95 percent of that population relies upon ground water for drinking.  This is very concerning as pesticides are most often used water in these areas.  This is true for American cotton growing districts as well as for other nations where our cotton may be coming from such as India, Turkey, China and Egypt.

I don’t encourage consumption in general but after finding out about these facts I was quite motivated about writing an article that supported the purchase of organic baby bodysuits.
