Sealing High Traffic Concrete Areas

Driveways and walkways are high traffic areas and are subject to all of the elements. Anything from road salt, algae and everyday household products can damage them. Finding a good concrete water repellent sealer is a smart move. If your drive or walk are starting to show signs that they are failing, contact a professional to let you know if it is too late to treat it, or if a good cleaning and application of a concrete sealer could help. If they believe that a sealer could help, then cleaning the surface is the first thing that you should do. Using a pressure washer is the best way to do this, but if there are stains then using stain removers that are type specific, is recommended. Some sealers allow for a wet application and others for a dry one. Reading the manufacturers recommended instructions will let you know which is required for the product that you have purchased. More than likely, the sealer will require a complete concrete coating and then a second application a few hours later. Allowing proper dry time before walking or driving on the slab is also required. By applying the sealer, you may have stopped or at least slowed down the possibility of freeze/thaw damage, eliminated internal and external contaminants, improved the overall density, strength and hardness and reduced expensive maintenance costs down the road. Of course, applying the sealer as soon as can be done to new concrete is recommended but if that is just not an option, then doing it as soon as possible is always a smart decision.
