Looks Old but I Bought it New

Living in downtown Chicago in a high rise apartment complex, you get to see a lot of glass and steel all day, every day.  Once I’m inside my apartment however, I do get to escape the chaos of the city, at least for short periods of time.  A few years ago I did a complete make-over of my apartment that included a lot of Rustic Furniture and log furniture.  My apartment doesn’t exactly look like the inside of a log cabin, but it certainly does have a much warmer feel and look to it.

The kitchen, bedroom, and living room are all done in a rustic motif with log furnishings like the bed, lamps, armoires, coffee table, and a few other pieces of log furniture.  With soft light, the entire apartment has a different feel to me.  It’s not something made of plastic or glass or steel, which all have a certain hardness and coldness that you just don’t get with hardwood.

Just because a lot of rustic furniture looks distressed or old even when its new does not have much to do with the quality of the furniture.  Logs are extremely durable.   Just because the style is rustic does not mean that it cannot be modern.  In fact I have quite a few log chairs in my apartment that look rather modern in design, and somehow they still retain that warm feeling about them.

Now I will admit that the bedroom does have a rather log cabin feel, because I chose rustic furniture that looked a more antique.   I might say the same about the living room if not for the coffee table, which is pretty much the centerpiece, and it very modern looking even though the base looks like a tree stump.

The one unusual thing about rustic furniture that looks like something out of the past, is the expense.  I’m willing to bet that you can find reasonably priced pieces out there on the net, but in general rustic furniture is very expensive because its hand crafted in most cases.  I guess that’s the irony, that you are paying a premium price from something new that looks very old.
