Preparing a Deck for TWP Stain

When washing a deck many people are at a lose on how to do it right. This washing step is the most important factor in a new deck stain like TWP stain performing as expected. You can go buy the most expensive wood stain available and apply it to an unclean wood surface and it will not hold up to its capabilities. Every stain can will tell you that the wood surface must first be cleaned. So the trick is to figure out how clean is clean. Some will go rent or but a pressure washer and wash the wood with just water and pressure. Though it may appear the wood is cleaner than it was, it is not a good option. Water and pressure will clean the wood somewhat but not nearly enough for TWP stain or any deck stain to penetrate the wood properly. A wood cleaner is necessary in conjunction with a pressure washer. The misconception is that just because a pressure washer is recommended that it is accepted to blast the wood with high pressure. This is not the case. High pressure will fur and splinter the wood leaving unsightly wand marks. If you have ever ripped across wood at a close range with a pressure wand, you know exactly what I am referring to. Turning down the pressure on the washer will results in a better looking surface before applying TWP stain. This is why using a deck cleaner is important, the cleaner will break up dirt so a lower pressure can be used so the wood is not ruined.
