Preparing Wood for TWP Stain
When restoring or preserving a wooden deck it is vital to prep the wood properly before choosing a wood stain of any kind. The must be free of any dirt and contaminants in order for the new wood sealer to penetrate properly. This also includes any old sealer, stains, or paints that might have been applied to the wood in the past. Any type of deck sealer like TWP stain should not be applied over other sealers or paints. The stain is designed to dive into the wood to protect the fibers from moisture and it cannot do that if other sealers and oils are blocking it. Once the wood is completely clean it is necessary to allow the wood to dry for a few days. The wood needs to be around a 12-15% moisture level or less before applying TWP stain or any type of stain for that matter. Trapping moisture in the wood will only results in the deck stain failing prematurely and not holding up properly. After the wood has sufficiently dried, a good quality deck sealer such as TWP stain can be applied to the wood. This will lock out moisture and the sun’s harmful UV rays which would otherwise crack and split the wood and also turn it gray. A neglected deck can be extremely unsightly and can actually bring the property value down. Staying on top of wood maintenance is key to the wood’s longevity and the overall curb appeal and value of the property.
