Preparing Wood Surfaces for Messmers Deck Stain
When considering sealing a wooden deck, it is important to remember to clean the wood properly before doing any sealing at all. Improper wood surface preparation is the number one reason a deck sealer fails prematurely. Many people do not realize this and will blame the sealer once this occurs when really the product no matter what brand it was, never had a chance. You would never refinish a piece of antique furniture without first prepping it. You would clean it and even strip any old paint or stain off of it and probably also sand it. You would do whatever it took to get it back down to bare wood so you were sure it would accept the new coat of stain. Well the same goes for a wooden deck surface, you have to prep it correctly or the new deck stain will not penetrate properly. You could go buy a quality stain like Messmers but if the wood was not prepped the right way, the stain would not have a chance to dive into the wood and do its job. Even with Messmers, one of the best wood sealers on the market, the surface needs to be prepared. Most of the time a good wash with a wood cleaner will do the trick. The use of a pressure washer by an experienced operator can be useful. If there is old stain on the deck, it will have to be removed with special cleaners so the Messmers or other stain can dive into the wood properly so you can expect desirable results.
