Why Deck Stain is Important to the Life of Your Deck
One of the best ways to preserve your wooden deck is with a quality deep penetrating deck stain. Deck stain is specially formulated to lock out moisture and harmful UV rays that can crack, warp, and splinter wood. These will help increase the longevity of any wooden deck, fence, or house siding that would otherwise be subjected to the elements. Moisture is absorbed by the wood every time it rains or when there is dew present in the mornings. This moisture absorption causes the wood fibers to swell. Later in the day as the sun starts to brighten, the moisture begins to dry out causing the wood fibers to shrink. The constant swelling and shrinking is what causes damage to the wood fibers which is why it is vital to the life of the wood to lock out moisture with a deck stain. Deck stains come in many different tones and pigment thicknesses. The more pigment the more sun protection a deck stain can provide but the harder it will be to maintain. So finding a happy medium is the key. Most professional wood deck stain contractors will tell you to use an oil based deck stain to get the best maintainable results. Oil based stains will just fade overtime and are easier to maintain than a water based deck stain. Water based deck stains tend to peel and flake when they wear out as opposed to just fading. This causes them to be much harder to remove completely when it comes time for maintenance.
